Understanding Symbol 1 vs. Symbol 7: Clearing Up COI Confusion in the Auto Liability Section
When reviewing a Certificate of Insurance (COI), especially in the Automobile Liability section, the symbols used aren’t just formalities—they define the actual scope of coverage. One of the most common areas of confusion involves Symbol 1 (Any Auto) and Symbol 7 (Scheduled Autos). Misunderstanding the difference between these two can lead to compliance gaps and unintentional liability exposure.
Let’s break down what these symbols really mean—and why it’s important to get them right.
What Does “Symbol 1 – Any Auto” Mean?
Symbol 1 provides the broadest level of auto liability coverage available. It covers liability arising from the use of any auto, including:
-
Autos the insured owns
-
Hired or leased autos
-
Borrowed autos
-
Non-owned vehicles used in the course of business
This symbol is commonly required in contracts because it guarantees maximum liability protection for any vehicle used by the insured, whether listed or not.
What Is “Symbol 7 – Scheduled Autos”?
Symbol 7, in contrast, is limited to vehicles specifically listed on the policy declarations page. If a vehicle isn’t scheduled—meaning named on the policy—it isn’t covered under this symbol.
Symbol 7 does not automatically cover hired, borrowed, or non-owned vehicles unless additional symbols (like 8 and 9) are also listed on the policy. It’s a narrower form of coverage and may not satisfy the requirements in many contractual agreements.
Why the Confusion Matters
Some insurance certificates are issued showing Symbol 7 when Symbol 1 is required by contract. This creates a false sense of security for certificate holders expecting broad auto liability coverage. In the event of an accident involving an unscheduled or rented vehicle, the policy may offer no coverage—even if a COI was issued.
That means:
-
The certificate holder may be left exposed.
-
The insured may breach contract requirements.
-
Claims may be denied due to incorrect symbol usage.
How to Ensure COI Accuracy
To avoid coverage gaps:
-
Always confirm the correct symbol is listed when reviewing a COI.
-
If a contract requires “Any Auto,” it must clearly be Symbol 1—not Symbol 7.
-
If Symbol 7 is used, verify that all required autos are scheduled, and confirm whether Symbols 8 and 9 are also included for additional coverage types.
